If your washing machine does not drain water out of the tub, the problem may be related to simple clogging or any of the failed components in the drainage system. The major parts of the washing machine drainage system are the pump and the drain hose. The fix for this problem may be easy or difficult depending on the cause of the problem. If you follow the steps given below, we think that you will be able to identify the cause of the problem or fix it with little to no money.

  1. 1 Repair it free: Find if you have warranty for your washing machine. If you bought your cloth washer within one year, it is most likely that you have warranty. Most appliance manufacturers provide one year free warranty. If you have warranty, call the company and get your washing machine fixed. If you do not have warranty and do not want to spend too much money, you will have to spend some time to identity and possibly fix the problem. The steps below will guide you through the process of identifying and fixing the problem.
  2. 2 Kinked drain hose: Check if the drain hose is kinked. If so, try to straighten it. Sometimes when a hose is kinked, it may have small holes when you straighten it. If you see any hole or weak area in the hose, you should replace the drain hose with a new one. Start the washer and check if it drains water properly. Proceed to the next step if it does not drain water.
  3. 3 Clogged drain hose: Disconnect the drain hose from the washer and flush the hose with water from a running hose. Check the inside of the hose for any material that may have clogged the hose. If you find any clog, clear the clog by inserting a plastic tube. Install the cleaned drain hose in the washer. Tighten the ends of the hose with screws and clamps. Operate the washing machine and check if it is draining water now. Go to the next step if it does not drain water.
  4. 4 Faulty lid switch: Check the lid switch. When you close the lid, the lid switch should click. If it does not click, then the lid switch mechanism may be faulty. The lid switch is inside the washing machine near the door. In most washers, you will have to open the frame that holds the door to reach the lid switch. Refer to the User Guide to locate the lid switch. Check the switch and replace it if it is defective. In some washing machines, there is a fuse for the switch (normally located in the control panel). If the fuse is burned, replace it. Also, check if the lid tab that strikes the switch is broken or bent. If it is broken or bent replace or fix it. Now, check if your cloth washer is draining water or not. If it does not drain, follow the next step.
  5. 5 Faulty pump: Disconnect the washing machine from power. Check the pump. You will have to open the back of the washer to reach the pump. If it is faulty, replace it. Start the washing machine and check if it is draining water now. If it still does not drain, call a qualified appliance repair technician for fixing the draining problem.
