Almost every house in an industrialized country has a dishwasher machine. The main purpose of a dishwasher is to clean and dry the dishes with minimal human involvement. It also employs the idea of batch processing by washing multiple dishes at a time instead of washing them one by one. The main components of a washing machine includes a water inlet valve, a motor, a pump, one or more spay handle, a soap dispenser, a heating element, a timer, and a thermostat. Some washing machines may have a blower fan and a drain valve.

A washing machine uses a set of controls and helping components to complete the washing cycle. A simplified version of sequential steps that take place during a complete wash cycle is shown below.

  1. 1 User loads dishes: The owner or the user of the dishwasher loads the dishes in the washing machine.
  2. 2 User fills soap dispenser: The user puts soap in the soap dispenser.
  3. 3 User closes the door and starts dishwashing machine.
  4. 4 The timer of the washing machine sends a signal to the water inlet valve solenoid to open the water inlet valve. The water inlet valve is opened and the hot water flows into the washing machine tub until the flow is stopped by the timer. Washing machines use different types of devices to measure the water level. When the correct amount of water is filled, the sensor sends signal to the timer to stop filling.
  5. 5 When the water is being filled, the soap dispenser dispenses soap into the water.
  6. 6 When the water is being filled, the heating element heats the water.
  7. 7 When the water is being filled, the motor and pump are started. The pump forces the hot soap-water mix to spray through the nozzles of the spray arm. This hot water spray hits the dishes and cleans them. Ultimately, the water falls on the tub for reuse. This washing process continues until the timer stops it.
  8. 8 The timer directs the pump to drain out the soap water. The soap water is drained out of the dishwasher.
  9. 9 The timer starts the rinse cycle, the dishes are rinsed thoroughly. Some dish washers have sensors that measure the turbidity of rinse water and the rinse cycle stops when a certain turbidity level is attained.
  10. 10 The timer starts the drying cycle by using the heating element heat or by running the blower fan. The timer stops the drying process when the dishes are completely dry.
  11. 11 The last step is the end of the wash cycle for a typical washing machine.
