Vents in the dryer plays a very important role in the proper operation of your dryer. If the vents are not of right type and they are installed incorrectly, they will be clogged by lint. Clogged vents restrict air flow and may lead to many problems including longer drying time, excessive use of energy, fire, overheating, burnt out fuse, etc. You must try your best to install a good vent made of correct material. Proper installation of the vent is very important.

  • Material of vent: The US Consumer Protection Safety Commission recommends replacing plastic or foil, accordion-type ducting material with rigid or corrugated semi-rigid metal duct. Most manufacturers specify the use of a rigid or corrugated semi-rigid metal duct, which provides maximum airflow. The flexible plastic or foil type duct can more easily trap lint and is more susceptible to kinks or crushing, which can greatly reduce the airflow.
  • Size and length: The optimum diameter of a duct is 4 inches. Duct smaller in diameter may restrict proper air flow. It is recommended that the vent is kept as short as possible. Vents should be horizontal and straight. Sometimes it may be necessary to have few elbows in the vent. Small, short and horizontal (or downward) vents will facilitate the maximum unrestricted airflow out of the dryer. If the vent is oriented vertically and relatively longer, the air with moisture will be restricted and may form water droplets in the vent. This will lead to quick build up of lint in the vent, and eventually other severe problem will be developed. Correct installation of dryer vents is shown in the following diagram.
