The principles of clothes dryer are relatively very simple. The air is sucked into the dryer and heated by a heating component (heating element in electric dryers, gas burner in gas dryers). This heated air is pushed into the rotating drum that contains the clothes. The hot air in the drum helps in evaporating the water in the clothes. This hot air absorbs evaporated moisture in the drum and escapes the dryer through the vent. This is how water from the cloth is removed and you get dry clothes at the end of drying cycle.

As you can see the way clothes are dried in automatic dryers is very similar to how it used to be done before modern clothes dryer was invented. People used to wash their clothes by hand and then hang the clothes using strings. Sunlight used to help evaporate the water from clothes and air used to absorb water. At the end of 4-8 hours of drying time, people used to get dried clothes. The same principle is used in modern day clothes dryers. Only difference is that electricity or gas is used to heat air instead of sunlight, blower is used instead of natural wind to remove moisture from clothes. The automatic controls used in modern dryers made our life easier. They control the time to stop drying, the maximum temperature of air, etc. Also, modern dryers have shortened the length of drying from 4-6 hours to 20-40 minutes by providing controlled heated air flow quickly.

You may be surprised to know that majority of world population does not have access to the modern clothes dryers. They still use the old process of hanging clothes and let the sun and wind dry the clothes.
