ENERGY STAR compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) are 66% more efficient and last six to ten times longer than standard incandescent bulbs. Their light quality matches or beats standard bulbs.

Benefits of Using ENERGY STAR CFLs

  • Save Money: ENERGY STAR CFLs save $20 to $30 per bulb in energy costs over their lifetime. This more than offsets their initial cost.
  • Save Air Conditioning:—ENERGY STAR CFLs produce 70 percent less heat than standard bulbs. In summertime this can help reduce the amount of time your air conditioner operates.
  • Last Longer:Incandescent bulbs last for 750 to 1000 hours. ENERGY STAR qualified CFLs last up to 6,000 hours or four years, based on four hours use per day.
  • Reduces Emissions:If every household in the U.S. replaced one light bulb with an ENERGY STAR CFL, it would prevent as much power plant pollution as removing a million cars from the road.

Tips for Buying ENERGY STAR CFLs

For the greatest savings, buy ENERGY STAR bulbs for the light fixtures you use most.

  • Look for the ENERGY STAR logo on the package. Many of the CFLs may not have "CFL" or "compact fluorescent" text on the package, but most of them do have the ENERGY STAR logo on the package.
  • CFLs come in many shapes and sizes, including: spirals and mini spirals, double, triple, and quadruple tubes, circle-line, cover-a-line, cover globe, and covered bullet or torpedo shapes. There are also three-way CFLs.
  • Certain CFLs work in dimmable, three-way fixtures as well as torchieres. They are also available for ceiling fans. Check the package to be sure you are buying the correct bulb.
  • CFLs offer a range of light color and quality, as well as light output. Those with a lower number on the color range offer warmer and softer light, while the daylight bulbs are very bright white light. To save energy, find the bulb with the light output you need (lumens), then choose the watts. For reference: a 15w CFL produces 450 lumens; a 23w CFL can produce 1100 or 1600 lumens.
