Removing oven door is sometimes necessary for fixing something inside the oven or simply cleaning the oven. Most of the manufacturers write detailed information on removing and re-installing the door in user’s guide. Some oven doors are attached to the oven using hinges while others use clip-in mechanisms. It appears that all the range manufacturers made it very easy to open the door. The best instructions can be found in the user’s manual. Since there are various ways how the door is attached to the oven, we are writing the following instructions as a general reference. These instructions are for a free standing Whirlpool Super Capacity range door. You can follow the steps below to remove and re-install the door of a Whirlpool range (model: RF315PXEW).

  1. 1 Take precaution: Turn off the power source by putting the control panel switch at OFF position or pulling out the fuse for the range. Unplug the power cord if there is any. Be absolutely sure that the range is not getting power by turning ON the switches for each heating element. With the power OFF and the switches of the elements ON, wait for about three minutes. Put your hand close to the heating elements; avoid touching the heating elements. You should not feel any heat if power is OFF. Turn the switches at OFF position.
  2. 2 Prepare a place for placing the detached door: Use news papers, rugs or old used clothes to make a soft seating place for the door. Make sure you do not block any walking area in the house. This is to protect your door from accidental scratches or damages.
  3. 3 Remove the door: Open the door half way and you will see a small hole on each hinge attached at the bottom of the door. Insert a nail or a screw into the hinge holes on both sides of the door. Move the door very slowly towards the oven as if you are closing the door. Stop when the door stops moving. Hold both sides of the door firmly and pull out the door. Place the detached door on the soft place you prepared before.
  4. 4 Re-install the door: Make sure that the nails or screws that you inserted in the hinge holes during removal of the door are still in place. Hold both sides of the door firmly and position the door as if it is open half way. Align the bottom of the door along the bottom of the oven and push hinges inside the hinge slots. Now move the door slowly towards the oven and watch until the nails or screws inserted in the hinge holes becomes loose. Use long nose pliers to remove the nails or screws from the hinge holes. Close the door all the way; you should see that the door closes perfectly.
  5. 5 Test for functionality: Turn ON power to the range. Open and close the door several times and inspect if the door functions correctly. Observe if the oven light comes ON when the door is opened and the light goes OFF when the door is closed.
