If the bulb in your oven does not light up when the switch is ON, the problem may be associated to the bulb, the receptacle or the light switch. You can follow the simple steps described below to test the light switch.

  1. 1 Take precaution: Turn off the power source by putting the control panel switch at OFF position or pulling out the fuse for the range. Unplug the power cord if there is any. Be absolutely sure that the range is not getting power by turning ON the switches for each heating element. With the power OFF and the switches of the elements ON, wait for about three minutes. Put your hand close to the heating elements; avoid touching the heating elements. You should not feel any heat if the power is OFF. Turn the switches at OFF position.
  2. 2 Remove switch: Most ranges have door operated switches. The switch goes in ON or OFF position when the door is open or closed respectively. The switches are normally held by spring clips. Push in the spring clips and pry out the switch using a screw driver. Too much pressure on the switch may break it, so be careful.
  3. 3 Prepare switch for testing: Label the wires connected at the back of the switch using masking tape. This will help you in re-connecting the wires to the switch. Disconnect the wires from the switch.
  4. 4 Test switch: Set your VOM (volt-ohm-meter) for continuity testing (RX1). Zero out your VOM (volt-ohm-meter) by touching its two probes. Hold one probe of VOM at one of the terminals of the switch and hold the other probe at the remaining terminal of the switch. Now, turn the switch in ON position. If the VOM reads infinity, the switch is bad and you need to replace the switch. Detailed instructions can be found in the article how to replace an oven light switch.
  5. 5 Conclude test correctly: At the end of the test you may need to leave the area to buy parts. Make sure that you put all detached parts in place so that children do not get hold of them and get into unfortunate accidents. Turn the power OFF. Remember that SAFETY is number one.
