If the foods in the food compartment of your refrigerator freeze, you need to repair the problem. Instead of being too much concerned, you can go through the following systematic approach. If you follow the steps given below, we believe that you will be able to resolve your refrigerator problem with little to no money.

  1. 1 Repair it free: Find if you have warranty for your refrigerator. If you bought your refrigerator within one year, it is most likely that you have warranty. Most appliance manufacturers provide one year free warranty. If you have warranty, call the company and get your refrigerator fixed. If you do not have warranty and do not want to spend too much money, you will have to spend some time to identify and possibly fix the problem. The steps below will guide you through the process of identifying the problem.
  2. 2 Check food compartment temperature: According to the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) the maximum temperature in the food compartment should be 40 degrees Fahrenheit. The recommended correct temperature in the fresh food compartment should be between 35-40 degrees Fahrenheit. Measure the temperature in the food compartment with a thermometer (preferably appliance thermometer).
    1. a If the temperature is close to or below 35, raise the temperature to about 40 degrees. Wait for few hours and see if the food is still getting frozen. We assume that if everything is functioning correctly, your food should be at correct temperature and should not freeze. Set the refrigerator temperature to 38 degrees Fahrenheit.
    2. b If your measured temperature is between 35 and 40 degrees Fahrenheit, theoretically your food should not freeze. However, your refrigerator may have one of several problems: localized design flaw, faulty thermostat, leaky refrigerant issue, cold air migration from freezer to fresh food compartment or a defective air damper. Re-arrange the food and see if the foods in specific section are frozen. If so, call the manufacturer, they should be able to help you (they will do it free if you have warranty). If you can not get help from the manufacturer and it is OK for you not to use the section where foods get frozen, then avoid this area and put food in other areas.
    3. c If you raise the thermostat temperature, and the temperature in the refrigerator does not go up; most possibly you have a bad thermostat. You need to replace the thermostat. Changing thermostat is easy if you want to do it. Check your thermostat or get it checked by a qualified technician. You can call somebody from the craigslist and pay a small amount of money just to diagnose the problem. In this case, you just have to pay for the diagnosis. If you ask, the technician may tell how you can replace the faulty part.
