You notice that your refrigerator ice maker is not producing any ice. You may think that the ice maker is broken and you have to spend a lot of money to fix it. In general, the ice maker problems can be solved very easily by following some easy steps. We think that if you follow the following steps, you will be able to fix the ice maker problem with no money to a significantly low amount of money.

In order to produce ice, the ice maker must have three essential things: correct temperature in the freezer, adequate amount of water, and the ice maker must be ON.

  1. 1Repair your refrigerator free: Find if you have warranty for your refrigerator. If you bought your refrigerator within one year, it is most likely that you have warranty. Most appliance manufacturers provide one year free warranty. If you have warranty, call the company and get your refrigerator fixed. If you do not have warranty and do not want to spend too much money, you will have to spend some time to identify and possibly fix the problem. The steps below will guide you through the process of identifying the problem.
  2. 2Check if the ice maker arm is in ON position: There is a thin coat hanger like wire in your ice maker. The ice maker is ON when is wire is in down position. Your ice maker will not produce any ice if this wire is in raised position. Lower the wire and set it in down position. Wait for few hours and check to see if the ice maker is producing ice. Proceed to the next step if the problem is not resolved.
  3. 3Check freezer temperature: Check the freezer temperature using an appliance thermometer. The recommended temperature for freezer is 0 degree Fahrenheit. If the freezer temperature is higher than 5 degrees Fahrenheit, the ice maker will not produce any ice. You should try all options to bring the freezer temperature down to 0 or close to 0 degree. The options you may try are: check the thermostat and check the door seals. If any of these parts are bad, you need to replace them. If this does not solve the issue, follow the next instructions.
  4. 4

Check if icemaker water inlet valve is clogged: Check if the water inlet valve is clogged by ice cubes or frozen water. If it is blocked by ice cubes, you should be able to clean it by hand. If the water valve is clogged by frozen water, use a hair dryer to melt the frozen water and clean the valve. You must be very careful if you use hair dryer, excessive heat will melt plastic parts. After you clean the water supply valve, turn on the ice maker, wait for few hours and check if the icemaker is working or not. If this step fails to resolve your issue, try the following steps.

  5. 5

Check water supply line to the refrigerator: Sometimes the water supply line to the refrigerator may get clogged. Check the water supply line and fix it if required. To check the water supply line, you need to shut-off the main water line valve. Then disconnect the supply line from the refrigerator. Put a bucket under the end of the water supply line that connects to the refrigerator, and then open the main water valve slowly. If there is any clog in the line, water will not flow freely. Unclog the supply line using appropriate method and reconnect it to the refrigerator. Put the refrigerator in its normal operating condition, wait for few hours and check if it is producing any ice cubes. If it fails to produce any ice, proceed to the next step.

  6. 6

Check water filter: Check if the water filer is dirty, replace it if necessary. Check now if the icemaker produces any ice.

  7. 7

After following the above steps, if the refrigerator icemaker still does not produce any ice, the thermostat needs to be checked and replaced (if faulty). At this time, you need to call a qualified appliance repair technician to fix the icemaker.
