You notice that your refrigerator ice maker is not producing enough ice. You may think that the ice maker is broken and you have to spend a lot of money to fix it. In general, the ice maker problems can be solved very easily by following some easy steps. We think that if you follow the following steps, you will be able to fix the ice maker problem with no money to a significantly low amount of money.

Depending on the type of refrigerator, the ice making capacity will vary. A side-by-side refrigerator will take about 3 days to fill the ice bucket.

In order to produce normal amount of ice, the ice maker must have three essential things: correct temperature in the freezer, adequate amount of water, and the water valve must be working correctly.

  1. 1Repair your refrigerator free: Find if you have warranty for your refrigerator. If you bought your refrigerator within one year, it is most likely that you have warranty. Most appliance manufacturers provide one year free warranty. If you have warranty, call the company and get your refrigerator fixed. If you do not have warranty and do not want to spend too much money, you will have to spend some time to identify and possibly fix the problem. The steps below will guide you through the process of identifying and fixing the problem.
  2. 2Check if the water line is clogged: If there is shortage in the water supply to the ice maker, it will not procuce enough ice. Check if the water line that is attached to the back of the refrigerator is delivering enough water or not. Sometimes the line may get clogged. Shut off the water bulb, disconnect the water line from the back of the refrigerator. Then put a bucket under the water line and turn on the water. Notice if water is flowing freely or not. If you notice any clog, you need to replace the tube that delivers water to the refrigerator.
  3. 3Check freezer temperature: Check the freezer temperature using an appliance thermometer. The recommended temperature for freezer is 0 degree Fahrenheit. If the freezer temperature is higher than 5 degrees Fahrenheit, the ice maker will not produce enough ice, you may get few cubes after a few days. You should try all options to bring the freezer temperature down to 0 or close to 0 degree. The options you may try are: check the thermostat and check the door seals. If any of these parts are bad, you need to replace it. If this does not solve the issue, follow the next instructions.
  4. 4

Check if icemaker water inlet valve is clogged: Check if the water inlet valve is clogged by ice cubes or frozen water. If it is blocked by ice cubes, you should be able to clean it by hand. If the water valve is clogged by frozen water, use a hair dryer to melt the frozen water and clean the valve. You must be very careful if you use hair dryer, excessive heat will melt plastic parts. After you clean the water supply valve, turn on the ice maker, wait for about 24 hours and check if the icemaker is making enough ice or not. If this step fails to resolve your issue, try the following step.

  5. 5

Check water supply line to the refrigerator: Sometimes the water supply line to the refrigerator may get clogged. Check the water supply line and fix it if required. To check the water supply line, you need to shut-off the main water line valve. Then disconnect the supply line from the refrigerator. Put a bucket under the end of the water supply line that connects to the refrigerator, and then open the main water valve slowly. If there is any clog in the line, water will not flow freely. Unclog the supply line using appropriate method and reconnect it to the refrigerator. Put the refrigerator in its normal operating condition, wait for few 24 hours and check if it is producing enough ice cubes. If it fails to produce enough ice, proceed to the next step.

  6. 6

Check water filter: Check if the water filer is dirty, replace it if necessary. Put the refrigerator in operation. After about 24 hours check if the icemaker produces reasonable amount of ice as it used to.

  7. 7

After following the above steps, if the refrigerator icemaker still does not produce enough ice, the thermostat needs to be checked and replaced (if faulty). At this time, you need to call a qualified appliance repair technician to fix the icemaker.
