If you find that your refrigerator is not cold enough, you may have an easy or a hard problem at hand. We are assuming that you have measured the temperature in your refrigerature and compared with the correct refrigerator temperature. After comparing your measured temperature and the suggested proper temperature, you discovered that your refrigerator is not cooling enough as it used to. Instead of being too much concerned, you can go through the following systematic approach. If you follow the steps given below, we believe that you will be able to resolve your refrigerator problem with little to no money.

  1. 1Repair your refrigerator free: Find if you have warranty for your refrigerator. If you bought your refrigerator within one year, it is most likely that you have warranty. Most appliance manufacturers provide one year free warranty. If you have warranty, call the company and get your refrigerator fixed. If you do not have warranty and do not want to spend too much money, you will have to spend some time to identify and possibly fix the problem. The steps below will guide you through the process of identifying the problem.
  2. 2Clean dust, lint, etc from grill and condenser: In most refrigerators, there is a plastic grill at the base of the refrigerator. The refrigerator condenser coil is placed behind this grill. The grill is used for fresh air flow. With time, the grill and the condenser coil get dirty with pet hair, dust and other airborne particles. This build up of undesirable materials of the grill resists proper air flow, which in turn reduces the efficiency of the condenser. This may be the cause why your refrigerator is not getting cold enough. Here is a picture of the grill for your reference.

Disconnect the refrigerator from its power source. Clean dust and lint build up from the grill and the condenser coils. Take extra care during the cleaning procedure. You can use small vacuum cleaner and appliance brush for this cleaning process.

Reconnect the refrigerator to the power source and make sure all the temperature settings are correct. Use the refrigerator for about 24 hours. This should resolve the problem in your refrigerator.

  3. 3 If the problem persists after following the steps above, the refrigerator evaporator defrosting system may not be working. If you see any ice build up anywhere inside the freezer compartment, this will indicate that the defrost system is not working properly. In this case, the defrost system needs to be checked and the failed defrosting component needs to be replaced. The three main components of defrosting system are: defrost timer, defrost thermostat or bi-metal switch, and defrost heater. If the defrost system is correctly working, then the problem may be associated to the refrigerant level or the compressor. At this time you need to call a qualified appliance repair technician to diagnose and fix the problem.
