Refrigerators run in ON and OFF modes. The refrigerator is ON when it is cooling. The ON and OFF modes are controlled by the thermostat. The refrigerator will run until the temperature inside the refrigerator reaches the set temperature. When the preset temperature is reached, the compressor should cycle the refrigerator OFF.

If the refrigerator does not go through ON and OFF cycles, you need to identify the cause of the problem. If you follow the following steps, we think that you will be able to identify and resolve the problem.

  1. 1Repair your refrigerator free: Find if you have warranty for your refrigerator. If you bought your refrigerator within one year, it is most likely that you have warranty. Most appliance manufacturers provide one year free warranty. If you have warranty, call the company and get your refrigerator fixed. If you do not have warranty and do not want to spend too much money, you will have to spend some time to identify and possibly fix the problem. The steps below will guide you through the process of identifying the problem.
  2. 2Identify if thermostat is bad: Turn thermostat to a higher temperature and notice if the refrigerator goes through the ON and OFF modes. If the refrigerator does not go through the on and off cycles, the thermostat is bad and needs to be replaced.
  3. 3Identify if defrost timer is bad: Disconnect the refrigerator from the power source. Locate the defrost timer. The location of the defrost timer is dependent on the make and model of the refrigerator. It may be located behind the front grill, or behind the freezer near the compressor or in the temperature control console. Turn the defrost timer knob until it clicks. Connect the power cord to the power source and wait 30-40 minutes. If your refrigerator does not cycle in about 23 minutes, you probably have a bad defrost timer. Call a qualified repair technician to test the timer. If the timer is bad, it needs to be replaced.

Check if condenser coils are dirty: The refrigerator condenser is located at the bottom or at the back panel of the refrigerator. Unplug your refrigerator and locate the condenser coil. If you see a lot of dust, dirt, hair or other material on the coil, the condenser may not be functioning efficiently. Clean the condenser coil using a vacuum cleaner and soft condenser cleaning brush. Plug the power cord of the refrigerator to the wall outlet and see if the refrigerator cycles ON and OFF. It may take 40 minutes to several hours for the refrigerator to establish its proper cycles.
